How to control weedy vines
How to control weedy vines
Do you have trouble with weedy vines on your property? Vines like old man’s beard and banana passionfruit smother the tops of trees, preventing light from reaching the leaves below. Left unhindered, this can cause great damage to existing bush.
Protecting our natural environment is a community effort – REG certainly can’t do it alone! We have some top tips for dealing with weedy vines efficiently and effectively.
Cutting and treating stumps
This method is best for single vines and small infestations:
- Cut the stems at ground level, leaving the cut vines up the tree to wither and die well above the ground. Be aware that some species may resprout from vines left lying on the ground.
- Either dig the stump out, or…
- Paint the cut surface with gel herbicide within 30 seconds of cutting to ensure that the herbicide is taken into the stump. Use a squeeze bottle or paintbrush to avoid excess herbicide running onto surrounding plants and soil.
Cutting, waiting and spraying regrowth
This approach is best for large areas of vines, and requires a two-stage approach.
- Cut all the vines. Leave the cut vines hanging in trees to die off.
- At a later date when the regrowth is a metre long, spray the new foliage.
